How much has doom scrolling affected your life?

Well this reminds me of the other hobbies thread here, but I think it all matters that you need to only strictly use these social media apps to chat with any friends or just get your news on the daily stuff happenings out

Nothing more and nothing less to irritate you imo

I’m not sure how well it would work during the day, but setting my phone to switch to grayscale at 12:30 has been effective at night. It makes my one game unplayable and helps pull my attention away from other content, making it easier to stop doomscrolling and gaming in bed.

This is one of those habits you need to break out of the cycle. I’d suggest taking a break from your phone using screen time reminders or even downloading an app designed to help with this.

The OneSec app makes you wait before you can continue to the addictive apps you choose. Since it doesn’t actually block access, I haven’t felt the urge to override or uninstall it. It’s just annoying enough to create friction, which helped me lose interest in Instagram over time.

I broke the habit by using a 'dumb phone' for about a month. I was spending all day and night on a particular sub. I let the people who cared about me know about my tech break and told them to send me an SMS or call if they needed to reach me.

I downloaded the free app Opal, which lets you choose which apps to block and when. The tricky part is actually sticking to it and being disciplined. 🥲

As my psychologist said, if you can’t control it and it’s bad for you, cut it out of your life. Delete the apps and replace them with healthy habits and activities.

Remove your addictive apps from your home screen. This alone has cut my average screen time down by 1.5 hours a day.
Close all your tabs every day, or at least every few days.
Consider using greyscale mode, though it's pretty hardcore. It’s amazing how much our addiction to stimulation is tied to colors.

When your brain craves dopamine, it’s often because it’s lacking stimulation. Instead of doomscrolling, get up right away and head to the gym or go outside to the park. Leave your phone behind.

I’m not going to pretend I’ve got this all figured out, but I find that putting my phone in a harder-to-reach spot—like another room or the bottom of a bag—helps. My natural laziness tends to counteract my stimulation addiction.

Buy a phone lockbox on Amazon with a timer. It has holes so you can still answer calls, but you can’t use the phone for anything else.

I have ADHD too, and I find it helpful to organize using a piece of paper rather than apps or anything electronic. I hope that helps! If it doesn’t, well, I tried. :)

Yeah, I was just thinking about how I used to miss my teenage years before smartphones. Back then, I had to actually do stuff to keep my brain busy, and it made me way more creative and productive.

I once saw someone suggest turning your phone display to black and white to make it less engaging. I tried it, and it worked pretty well for me. It might not work for everyone, but it’s worth a try!

Make use of your focus settings! My sleep focus activates at 9:30 PM, and I also have a ‘personal time’ setting that manages my notifications. By controlling how and when I’m reminded that my phone exists, I’ve significantly reduced my doomscrolling. It’s been a huge help.
