The Lumen lighting technology featured in Unreal Engine 5 is now capable of running at 60 fps on PS5, though Epic Games aims to optimize it further to reach 120 fps.

During the Epic Games Unreal Fest 2024 (via) in Seattle, it was revealed that, with update 5.5, Unreal Engine is now capable of running high quality Lumen and hardware-based ray tracing at 60 fps on PS5, and by extension the Xbox Series X. Lumen is targeting less than 2 ms of rendering time. Epic Games is looking to make it more scalable in future, with further optimizations aimed at getting the rendering technology to target 120 fps on current-gen consoles.

Everyone got so caught up in the hype Epic built around Unreal Engine 5, especially some Microsoft fans who insisted that Hellblade 2 was the best thing ever, even though it ran poorly in comparison.

In all that excitement, people seemed to overlook the performance side of things.

Buuut, one big issue with UE5 has been its poor performance, partly because it was handling lighting through software emulation.

It would be great to see Lumen included in Performance Mode in more games in the future.

The most impressive use of Lumen lighting I've come across was in The Talos Principle 2.

However, it was only available in Quality Mode, where the framerate was a bit inconsistent (hovering between 40fps and 60fps). Still, it's a beautiful game overall!

That's cool.
Hopefully they can make some good strides on nanite optimization soon. Last I checked it wastes a lot of processing because of overdraw, making it wildly expensive.
