This was something revealed by veteran gaming news journalist Jason Schreier in the latest Friends Per Second podcast. Talking about the Bungie layoffs that happened recently, Schreier commented on how live service games cost millions to produce, and the mentioned how Naughty Dog’s “Factions” game was in development for “something like four years” and had a development team of “in the hundreds.”

I mean, Naughty Dog’s Factions game was in development for something like four years with a team in the hundreds. Like, that is an expensive proposition for something that was a miss… I mean that project, like that getting canceled was not a bloodless endeavor, there were some heads rolling at Sony as a result of that one.

It's unbelievable how Sony and Naughty Dog kicked off this project without grasping that a live service game requires a massive team of hundreds to keep it running smoothly.

Now they're facing a major exclusive drought after getting too caught up in the GAAS hype. It's a complete disaster. Hermen should've been fired.

Bring back straightforward multiplayer in side modes.

It’s really not that complicated. That's all we're asking for, and we'd like it to stick around for at least a year (ideally longer). Seriously, features like the old Assassin’s Creed multiplayer could be smaller-scale projects within the overall game.

Just tone down these massive projects, and everything would be fine.

It's unbelievable that Sony scrapped TLoU multiplayer and never even gave us a basic Factions 2, yet they're pushing games like Destruction All-Stars, FoamStars, and Concord to market. SMH, what are they thinking?
