Defeated Wandering Wright but the game wont let me absorb his spirit? What does this error eman. What did I miss?

Oh for that you need to meet the old man near the Snake Trial Bamboo. He will give you a blessed gourd that will let you absorb spirits. Also to retrive the ones you already missed. Rest at the Snake Trial Bamboo and select " Retrive Spirits" to retrieve any lost spirits.
